Occasionally in RootsMagic you may need to move the folder you keep your multimedia files in, this will result in broken multimedia links. In RootsMagic 4 there is an easy way to restore these broken links.

Click "Lists"-"Media Gallery" Any links that cannot be found will have a broken chain link icon on them.
To fix this click the tools button and select fix broken links, this automatically searches files and folders for the missing media.

On occasion not all the files will be found in which case you can restore links on mass by doing the following:

1 - Open RootsMagic
2 - Select an individual that has a missing photo
3 - Click the "Edit multimedia" (camera) button and select "Person"
4 - In the right panel where it says "File" write down (or highlight and copy) the full path except for the file name e.g. "C:/Program files/my pictures/"*

*NOTE. Do not include all of the text, only the path to the file and not the filename itself. e.g. "C:\documents and settings\user\pictures" NOT "C:\documents and settings\user\pictures\freds picture.jpg"

5 - Press "Close"
6 - Go to "Search" - "Search and replace"
7 - In "Field to search" select "Multimedia filenames"
8 - In "Search for" enter the path that you recorded in step 5
9 - In "Replace with" enter the path to where your pictures are now located. If you do not know what the path is then do the following:

Windows XP
a - Navigate to the folder in Windows
b - Once you have located the folder go to "Tools" - "Folder options"
c - Click the "View" tab and tick the box next to "Display full path in address bar"
d - Click "OK". You should now see the full path displayed in the address bar. Write this down or copy it. If you cannot see the address bar then go to "View" - "Toolbars" and select "Address bar".

Windows Vista
When I do manage to update the PC, and then do some more work on the PC, do I then have to do something to update the ToGo stick (e.g completely reinstall the ToGo program every time I want to go to a remote computer to do the research), or will it automatically update if it is plugged in to the PC?

One of the problems we often get asked is "How do you work with a selected set of people rather than everyone?"

The context can be reporting or exporting a group people.

The main way to work with groups is by using the groups icon.

1. Start RootsMagic and load your file.
2. Click on the Group icon (a yellow folder with 2 people in it above Index)
this switches to Groups instead of Index.
3. Under Groups click on the other yellow folder with 2 people in it, then select in the pop up "Named Groups" window [+ new]. Browse down to the key person and tick the box beside their name.
4. Then click on [Mark Group] and select in the drop down the appropriate option such as 'Descendants of highlighted person'.
You then get further options to select either 'direct descendants' or 'Descendants and spouse' or 'Descendants and collateral lines'.
5. You also need to click on the number of generations you want.
Then click OK. It will then ask you to enter a name for this group. Then OK the name.

You can the work with the selected group in various ways such as Individual Summaries, Custom Reports, Timelines, Fact Lists and GEDCOM.

For instance if you are working with reports such as Individual Summary you can then select the down arrow under 'People to Include' and choose your named group.

The same applies to GEDCOM, to do this go into file, export, people to export.
Then select the group name you have created.
It will then ask you for a name for the GEDCom file.

If it's a 'one of use' of a selection in GEDCOM then you don't need to create a named group.
1. Do "File > Export GEDCOM" from the RootsMagic menu.
2. Choose the People to export and choose Select from list. RootsMagic will bring up a list of people in the database.
3. Highlight the person you want to have as the starting point
4. Click the “Mark group" button and choose the option of ancestors of highlighted person and choose the option of descendants of highlighted person and choose the appropriate option.
5. Click OK
6. You may want to uncheck your spouse at this point?
7. Click "Export" and save the GEDCOM file.
8. Now create a new database ("File > New") and import the GEDCOM into it

I find the chart layout strange and wonder if I can set some different parameters or if I am missing something somewhere

A I find that if I make an error when manipulating box positions I can not go back a step and have to start from scratch again

B I am trying to change a 10 ft by 20 inch top to bottom descendant chart to less than 8ft which I find convenient for display purposes - our local hardware store keeps board up to 8 ft long.

I have got it down to about 8 ft 10 in and do not wish to change box sizes again if I can help it. There is still scope for more change BUT

1 There is a 13 in gap in the middle with no data showing, just connecting lines
2 The first row of descendants has siblings 228 inches apart ie parents at RH end and oldest siblings at the other end
3 there are numerous instances where children are shown close to cousins and their parents are far to the right
4 Boxes at the RH end are far removed from siblings in lower generations ie close to the end of the chart

Hello,

New to Forum, think Roots Magic V3 is really good.

I need to reinstall Windows on my laptop as its going wobbly, it was pre installed with Vista Home Premium when I bought it, unf. we can't find the disks that we made when Laptop was new so can't reinstall Vista. Now considering of buying and installing Windows 7.

Can someone tell me if Roots Magic 3 will work with Windows 7?

I have backed RM3 to both a CD and an external hardrive.

Thanks
