Hello.
I have been using RM3 for years, but now suddenly the Edit Person window no longer appears. This is the window you get when you double-click on an individual.
The database is fine as I copied it to another computer. I reinstalled RM, but the problem persists.
Any ideas?
Many thanks.
Is this problem happening on the same computer that you've had it installed on for years, or have you installed it on a new computer? (RootsMagic 3 isn't supported in Windows 7, but should be OK on Vista or XP.)
Are you getting any error messages at all?
Another way to get the Edit Person screen up on RootsMagic 3 by clicking Edit -> Person, or hit Enter on your keyboard.

Same computer for years. No other problems with the computer.
Have disabled Virus checker and Firewall without success. Using XP with SP3.
No error message, just no window, but if I click back on RM3, I get a beep. Computer still works. CPU/RAM usage normal. Can only stop RM3 using End Process on Task Manager.
The window does not appear however I try to display it - double click, Edit->Person, Edit->Family->Edit Mother/Father/Child, etc etc. All other windows appear.
The problem even occurs if I create a new database.
Has the Edit Person window become stuck somewhere on the screen?
If you press the Escape key on your keyboard once you have double-clicked on an individual, does the RootsMagic program continue to work? (If the Edit Person window is open but perhaps stuck at the bottom of the screen, hitting "Esc" will close the window and allow you to continue using RootsMagic, so this may be the problem).
Check the corners of your RootsMagic program, is there a window anywhere else on the screen? You may just see a thin line, where the window has accidently been dragged to the side or to the bottom of the screen.
That's it! Well done.
I started RM3, double clicked on a person, and looked around for the edges of the Edit Person window, but I couldn't see it anywhere. I pressed ESC and RM3 became usable again.
I figured that the Edit Person window was completely off the screen. After some research I discovered that RM3 stores the position and size of it's windows in an ini file in the user's Application Data folder. I opened the file and discovered the Edit Person position to be over 2000 - completely off the screen. I edited the position to more sensible values and the problem was solved.
How the values became so wrong is anyone's guess.
Thank you for your help.
This problem has lead me to two conclusions:
1) Uninstalling RM3 does not remove the ini file - the uninstaller leaves some files behind.
2) RM3 does not validate the data in the ini file - it was quite happy to draw a window off screen where the user could not access it.
